HBA Parade of Homes Featured Home Built by Habitat

Habitat construction standards make homes comfortable, easy to maintain and affordable. In October 2008, a home built during Habitat Wake's Home Builders Blitz was featured in the 2008 Parade of Homes-the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County's showcase of our area's finest new homes.

The builders who volunteered their time for the Blitz did so to demonstrate their investment in the quality of life for people in our area.

"We built quality homes, and we did so with the families in mind," said Ward Russell of the Triangle Builders Guild. "The project was an opportunity to use our resources to help others. Knowing one of our blitz homes will be part of North Carolina's largest open house - the Parade - means we can help put a spotlight on the quality construction and energy-efficient standards of the homes we built."

Inside Home and Hearth

The 43rd Annual Parade of Homes was held in October 2008. The International Association of Home Staging Professionals staged our featured home, demonstrating elements of design and function to make the home hospitable.

Home and Hearth Features

The 3-bedroom Parade of Homes entry built by members of the Triangle Builders Guild features wood siding obtained by STOCK Building Supply. STOCK was a platinum sponsor of the 2008 Home Builders Blitz. The material is an engineered composite wood that is "green." It will keep maintenance costs low, while having the beauty of wood.

Like all construction since 2005, volunteers built the home to Advanced Energy SystemVisionT standards. This effort deters moisture and increases air flow.

Homes Built by Habitat Wake

Habitat Wake builds homes using a variety of architectural designs and floor plans. Most homes consist of three bedrooms with approximately 1200 square feet of living and usable space. To the extent possible, houses reflect the neighborhood's prevailing architectural style and streetscape. Homeowners select interior features such as carpet, cabinets and countertops. All homes are professionally supervised and built to ensure high quality and consistency-including a comprehensive one-year warranty.

Volunteers and future homeowners perform most of the labor on Habitat homes including all carpentry, roofing, siding, interior trim, painting, and landscaping. Habitat Wake hires subcontractors for the site and foundation work, electrical, plumbing and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC).

Scenes of homes currently under construction show the fun and teamwork of being on site.

Partnership with Triangle Builders Guild

In spring 2008, to demonstrate their continued investment in the quality of life and the beauty of the area, the 29 member builders partnered with Habitat Wake for Home Builders Blitz 2008. Volunteering, these builders and their subcontractors built five homes from sub flooring to landscaping in one week: May 31 - June 6.

"I've seen that builders, subcontractors and suppliers here in Wake County have huge hearts," Tom Gipson, a residential builder, Habitat Wake board member and founder of the blitz concept. "They readily give their time and talents for a week of intense work. They channel their competitive energy into a spirit of camaraderie to help hardworking families realize the hope they have for better futures."

To date, 61 families in Wake County have purchased homes built during blitzes -- each gaining financial security and peace of mind.
