As Pride Month concludes, we look back on efforts made by organizations in our area to support and uplift LGBTQ+ communities. This year, we wanted to emphasize Habitat Wake's dedication to being an inclusive organization and supporting affordable housing for people of all backgrounds. From volunteer build days to community outreach and networking events, this has been a Pride Month to remember!

Volunteers, homeowners and Habitat Wake staff came together with sponsor Enact and community partners the LGBT Center of Raleigh and Harmony, NC LGBT+ Allied Chamber of Commerce, for our third annual Pride Build.

The build brought allies and LGBTQ+ communities together in support of inclusive, affordable housing. This year, Habitat Wake hosted two build days for volunteers to come together on the construction site June 7 and 28.

“I think it’s more important than ever that we come together to show support for the LGBT community and that we can build together just like everybody else,” said Dan McHugh, Director of Development at Habitat Wake.

Pride Build 2024 also aimed to raise funds in support of Habitat Wake's mission to build homes, communities and hope in the Triangle, as well as spread awareness of the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, including social stigma and youth homelessness.

Spreading our mission beyond the construction site

To extend our reach in the community, we attended events dedicated to celebrating equality, connecting individuals with resources and raising funds for organizations that serve, empower and advocate for the well-being of LGBTQ+ communities. This included tabling at Harmony’s PrideLife Expo in May, as well as LGBT Center of Raleigh’s Out! Raleigh festival in June. Staff members from various departments came out to share information about the services we provide in our community.

As Pride Build becomes an annual Habitat tradition, we will continue to work toward supporting a future where everyone's identity is honored and celebrated.
