The Loss of a Legend: Jimmy Carter's Passing

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter on a Habitat work site

We are deeply saddened by the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, a true Habitat hero, on Sunday, December 29. Along with his wife, Rosalynn, President Carter was a passionate advocate for affordable housing and an unwavering supporter of our mission. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.

The Carters are known for their commitment to serving others both at home and abroad. They first volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in their hometown of Americus, Georgia in 1984 and spent the rest of their lives building homes alongside thousands of volunteers in Carter Work Projects, bringing attention and resources to the issue of affordable housing and making Habitat for Humanity a household name.

I had the privilege of meeting President Carter twice – once at a Carter Work Project in Birmingham, Alabama, where I worked for 15 years before joining Habitat Wake. I also volunteered at Carter Work Project the next year in Haiti. He was as down-to-earth and humble as anyone could be, and while he was willing to serve as figurehead for Habitat at these events, he was clear that his main purpose on site was to work, just like everyone else.

As we honor his memory, our team will be regrouping in the new year to plan and coordinate upcoming events. In the meantime, if you're interested in volunteering, you can find opportunities here. There is also an online memory book available if you'd like to share any remembrances.

We will reflect on President Carter's incredible legacy of service and advocacy in the months to come. He worked tirelessly to make the world better for all kinds of people. We aim to carry that spirit and dedication into 2025.
