Habitat Wake’s mission is to bring people together to build homes,communities and hope. And, thanks to donors like you, Habitat Wakeis able to serve more homebuyers like Luz, whose dream of owning her own home was realized last year through Habitat Wake’s homeownership program.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to own a home. I was persistent,and I’m finally here.”
Completing the homeownership process can be challenging. In addition to financial education classes, applicants must complete 200 hours of sweat equity – volunteering on the build sites and in ReStores – before they can close on their homes. For Luz, it was a family affair. She and her two sons were able to work on their house together on the weekends, which only made them appreciate their home even more.
“When I’m driving in, I’m, like ‘That's my house,’" Luz says. "I don’t know how to explain it. I know what it feels like to be a homeowner. It feels good.”
