Homeownership is a distant goal for many in Wake and Johnston counties, where 1 in 4 families sacrifice necessities like groceries, healthcare and education just to afford housing. As a single mother, homebuyer Lyndsay understands these challenges all too well. With the support of the Habitat Wake community, she was finally able to build and purchase her own home.
Lyndsay demonstrated incredible perseverance and commitment toher dream of homeownership. She went through the application process several times before being accepted. She exceeded the required 220 sweat equity hours, relying on her mother for childcare so that she could volunteer.
As a Sunday school teacher, Lyndsay found the support from the local faith community particularly impactful. Various churches contributed volunteer hours as well as baffles decorated with messages of love and support.
“I got to meet so many people from the churches who poured so much love into my home," Lyndsay says.
"Knowing that there are signs with Bible verses and messages is a daily reminder of how much God loves me and that I was meant to be here.”
Lyndsay has since obtained a bachelor’s degree in social work and now helps our community’s vulnerable populations find independent living. She can also spend more with her daughter on their favorite activities like walking, bowling and going to the park.
