Last Tuesday, Habitat Wake dedicated the Holloway family home on Parnell Street. Deonna Holloway chose to build in the Long Acres neighborhood of Raleigh. This effort is part of a Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI) that is committed to bettering the communities in which our homeowners live. Deonna was born and raised in Raleigh, and now raises her eight children (two girls and six boys) here as well. She “has always wanted to be a home owner – to be able to have something to truly call home.” At the dedication, many neighbors showed up to support Deonna and her family as they begin this new phase of life. Not only will they have a home of their own, but they will have a community to support them. On Saturday, we dedicated the home of the Lee family in Augusta Crossings. Tykeena Lee has lived in North Carolina most of her life, and has called Raleigh home for the past ten years. She and her four children (three boys and one girl) “bounced around from apartment to apartment over the years.” When she was first introduced to Habitat in 2006, she did not yet meet the criteria, but she was determined to own a home. “Habitat is taking the time to partner with me not just to build a home, but to make sure I understand what homeownership means, and therefore I can make better decisions regarding my home.” These dedications bring together homebuyer family, sponsors, Habitat staff and volunteers who have all worked together to build these homes.
