Last Friday, donors, volunteers and homebuyers came together for our annual Habitat for Humanity Women Build. This event kicked off 12 week-long celebration of women and allies joining together to build a Habitat home.

Since 2009, this event has provided the opportunity for women and supporters to take a proactive step in serving their community by funding and constructing an affordable Habitat home.

This year, we were excited to build with our presenting event sponsor, UBS, as well as Grifols, Builders Mutual, Summit Design and Engineering Services, Dell Technologies, Regions Bank and Duke Raleigh Hospital. Volunteers from each of these companies joined homebuyers to build the interior and exterior walls for homes at our construction warehouse.

These walls constructed by these volunteers will turn into homes at Habitat Wake’s Old Poole Place community in southeast Raleigh. The community spans 23 acres and hosts 114 lots to be filled with 60 single-family homes and 54 townhomes.

The event comes as the affordable housing crisis grows: one in four families in our community is cost-burdened, meaning they pay too much of their income toward housing at the expense of other necessities like groceries, healthcare and education.

By bringing together partners for events like Women Build, Habitat Wake mobilizes people to address the crisis together.
