Many of our neighbors have been asking how they can do something about the affordable housing crisis in our community. That's why we launched an advocacy volunteer program that gives you the opportunity to take action for affordable housing policy.
Habitat Wake Advocacy Ambassadors actively engage in issue-based campaigns, meet with policymakers, and attend events to influence policy changes and promote equitable, safe and affordable housing for all.
This program is open to anyone in Wake or Johnston County, regardless of age or experience, and is 100% free.
We are collaborating with Habitat NC and the NC Housing Coalition to plan a Lobby Day at the state legislature. April 8th and 10th we are engaging with our local legislators for Local Lobby Days. We'll also be participating in the State Lobby Day on April 9th. This means opportunities to speak directly with your elected officials on the importance of affordable housing. Habitat Wake will set up meetings, provide talking points, and hold a preparation session ahead of the event. To participate, please RSVP to let us know your availability!
On March 3, we will be contacting our local and state legislators and asking them for their support for funding programs that increase access to affordable housing. You can reach out to your legislators by phone or email and templates with suggested language and talking points will be provided beforehand. Don't know who your elected officials are? That's OK! You can find them at www.usa.gov/elected-officials.
Part of our mission to build homes, communities and hope is to encourage our network to learn more about the context for our housing affordability challenges. Last year, we launched Forging Ahead on Affordable Housing, a compilation of research, maps and policy priorities intended to help our community rally around lasting solutions.
This year, we hosted conversations with our faith community of advocates, who eagerly engaged on topics of redlining with empathy and determination. Nearly 250 individuals participated in these facilitated conversations, settling in for the long haul of addressing racial inequities in Wake and Johnston counties.
