“I’m Second Lieutenant Bridget Pittman-Blackwell, and I’m a future Habitat Wake homeowner.”
Bridget hadn’t always envisioned a path in the military. "The thought would never have crossed my mind until I heard a briefing on my college campus," she recalls. "Listening to the benefits and the long-term goals soldiers had achieved — that was something I wanted for myself and my family.”
In 2021, Bridget joined the North Carolina National Guard, a decision that led her into a life of service. Today, she balances her duties in the Guard with graduate school, pursuing a degree in psychology. "I think my service has definitely given me an opportunity to be a resource for my family and also be a resource to myself, putting myself through school,” she says.
When the topic of homeownership came up, Bridget offered some unique insight as both an active-duty military officer and a future Habitat Wake homeowner.
“I’m excited to own a home. And I’m incredibly grateful to even be in this situation,” Bridget shares. “People often assume that military members have assistance when it comes to buying a home because of the VA home loan. But it’s not that simple — there are specific requirements, and not everyone qualifies. That’s why Habitat’s program means so much to me. Just because I wear a uniform doesn’t mean this journey is easy.”
At Habitat Wake, we understand that homeownership isn’t always straightforward for veterans. While our program is open to all who qualify, we recognize that certain groups, including veterans, can face unique challenges on the path to homeownership. This fall, we’ve introduced a “Season of Service,” beginning on September 11, and ending December 7, Pearl Harbor Day. Throughout this season, we’ve come together to build homes, complete home repairs and honor veterans in our community.
“It’s incredible that Habitat recognizes this,” Bridget shares. “There are so many veterans whose service goes unacknowledged, and to be part of an organization that sees and appreciates that is truly special.”
For Bridget, Veterans Day now holds a deep, personal significance. "For me, it’s a moment to remember everyone who has served. Being in uniform myself now, I don’t take it lightly. It’s about honoring the sacrifices of those who came before us and those who continue to serve."
Bridget is currently deployed in Western North Carolina, assisting with relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Helene. She’s in our thoughts, and we look forward to supporting her as she continues her journey toward homeownership upon her return.
