Last month, lawmakers in the Senate and the House of Representatives each passed respective versions of a tax reform plan. Now Congress is working to reconcile the differences between the two bills and hopes to hold a final vote by the end of the week.
During negotiations, Habitat Wake is advocating for Congress to protect the value of the charitable giving deduction in the final tax plan.
Both tax proposals double the standard deduction, which may result in fewer taxpayers itemizing and having access to the charitable deduction. This could reduce the number of people that donate to nonprofit organizations, like Habitat Wake.
Support from our generous donors enables us to build safe, affordable homes in partnership with Wake County families. We need your voice to help amplify the message!
Please call your members of Congress
Before the end of the week, we encourage you to contact your U.S. Representative and two Senators. Please ask them to support a universal charitable deduction that would be available to donors taking the standard deduction, as well as those who itemize.
Ask to speak to the tax legislative assistant
Senator Thom Tillis (202) 224-6342
Ask for Tyler Williams, tax legislative assistant.
Senator Richard Burr (202) 224-3154
Ask for Robert Sneeden, tax legislative assistant.
Look up contact information for your U.S. Representative
Use this template for your call:
"Hello, my name is ________ and I'm a constituent. I'm calling to request the Senator's/ Representative's support for making the charitable deduction universal in the final tax plan.
As you know, the charitable giving deduction is currently only available to taxpayers that itemize deductions on their tax returns. A universal charitable deduction would make the benefit available to those taking the standard deduction as well.
Making the charitable deduction universal would prevent unintended consequences to charitable giving as a result of doubling the standard deduction. Thank you!"
Let us know how it goes
After talking with your Congressional offices, please send an email to Rachel Zeitler, advocacy manager at Habitat Wake to let us know how the conversation went.
Thank you!
Together, we are making a difference. Thank you for raising your voice so everyone in Wake County can have access to a safe, affordable home.
