Volunteers work on a new deck for a veteran homeowner in Johnson County

Today, we had the privilege of doing something special. Volunteers from Military Missions in Action joined us on-site to work on a home preservation project for a fellow Johnston County veteran. Ralph, who has lived in his home for over 15 years, needed some help restoring his back and side deck. This project is part of Habitat Wake’s mission to complete 80 home preservation projects this year, and partnering with Ralph as part of our Season of Service made it even more meaningful.

Veteran homeowner Ralph outside of his home

“Being a veteran—it’s just a part of who I am,” Ralph shared with our team as he showed us around his home and expansive five-acre yard, underscoring the deep pride he has in both his service and his home.

Among today’s volunteers was Greg, another veteran, eager to give back to someone who shares his journey. “It’s all about giving back, right? I’m an Iraq War veteran myself, and I think it’s huge that we keep veterans in their own homes,” he said.

Our home preservation projects cover everything from installing new decks, roofs, HVAC systems, and more. These essential improvements strengthen neighborhoods, boost residents’ well-being, and, most importantly, allow homeowners like Ralph to stay in their homes as they age in place with comfort and dignity.

As Veterans Day approaches, we’re inspired by veterans in our community who continue to serve alongside us, strengthening bonds and helping transform the housing landscape in Wake and Johnston counties.
