Community Builds

At Habitat Wake, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day on, rather than a day off. Several faith groups joined forces for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Together, they built and raised walls for affordable homes in our community, embodying Dr. King's vision of the beloved community.

The event kicked off Habitat Wake’s annual Beloved Build, which for more than 10 years has brought faith groups together to put into practice Dr. King’s concept of the beloved community: an integrated, just society that is the ideal expression of the Christian faith.

On November 10, Habitat Wake celebrated the veterans in our community with our 2023 Veterans Build! Thanks to the Clayton High School Navy JROTC for presenting the colors at our kickoff ceremony. We appreciate Credit Suisse, MetLife, Builders Mutual and Eaton for their support and time spent volunteering.

This build allowed veterans to come together with a veteran homebuyer as we built and raised the walls for a home at our Old Poole Place community. Happy Veterans Day, and thank you to all our brave veterans for your service.

On Saturday, June 17th, elected officials from across Wake and Johnston counties came out to Old Poole Place in Raleigh to join in Elected Officials Build Day. Fifteen members of municipal, county, state governments and staff participated by lending their time and energy to building houses alongside Habitat volunteers.

Habitat for Humanity of Wake County launched our inaugural Veterans Build this week with a home preservation project in Willow Springs. The project includes fencing in the yard of a local veteran so he can provide a safe space for a service dog.

Shack-a-Thon is a 20-year collaboration between the N.C. State Habitat for Humanity Chapter and Habitat Wake. 

This past Sunday, I was out on the Brickyard at NC State’s campus and got to see students building shacks from the ground up for this year’s Shack-a-Thon to benefit Habitat Wake as well as raise awareness for affordable housing. I am here to tell you these students are strong, smart, innovative and ready to raise money! 

Every year, Habitats across the world take part in Women Build, an initiative that started 30 years ago in Charlotte, NC, when a group of women came together to build a house alongside a woman in the Habitat homebuyer program. This concept, championed by Habitat for Humanity International, has propelled the global movement for affordable housing to new heights.

The sound of hammers on nails rang out on Trimble Avenue in Cary last Friday as elected officials came together to build an affordable home with Habitat Wake. Sixteen policymakers from local, state and federal office participated in the 4th annual Elected Officials Build, demonstrating their commitment to affordable housing through policy change and through their own “sweat equity.”

Habitat Wake is thrilled to take a look back at fond memories of working with St. Augustine's University, one of the nation's longest-standing Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) as part of our #FoundingFriday series.

They are an esteemed ally in affordable housing, and our partnership with them remains active through our Episcopal Build.
